How I report, source and correct

Sources and opinions

I link the documents behind a story and credit other reporters whose work helped me find it. I’ll make clear what’s proposed, what’s been approved and what’s actually happening. When I’m making an argument, you should be able to tell.

Shops and cafés

I’m interested in how neighbourhood shops came to be here and what helps them stay. I don’t give them stars or rankings. The space, lease and surrounding block are often as interesting as what’s on the menu.

I pay for what I eat and drink. I don’t accept free visits, gifts or discounts in exchange for coverage, or use affiliate links or referral commissions. If Side Street takes sponsorship, I won’t feature the sponsor.

AI tools

I use AI tools to help organise public documents, research questions and edit drafts. I check the sources and take responsibility for what Side Street publishes. A visit, conversation or interview only belongs in a story if it happened. Generated illustrations are labelled.

Getting something wrong

If you spot a mistake, email hello@sidestreetvancouver.ca with the page and what needs fixing. A source link helps. I’ll add a dated correction for a material error.

People facing substantive criticism should have a fair chance to respond. I’ll disclose relevant relationships and sponsorships.

The election compass

The party comparisons are a work in progress, based on published sources. Estimates and missing answers are labelled. The methodology page explains how the chart and comparisons work.

Your information

Compass answers stay in your browser tab unless you choose to add numeric answers to anonymous reader totals. Sending a tip doesn’t sign you up for the newsletter. The privacy page has the details on email, storage and optional analytics.
